The creative process behind Elizabete Balčus’ drawing

The creative process for Elizabete Balčus’ drawing started in October 2017, after an invitation by Giovanni Di Rosa (a student in my drawing class at the University of Salerno) to join him for live drawing sessions at the Godot Art Bistrot of Avellino, Italy.  During those days, I attended a total of four concerts and drew while artists like Mary Ocher, Campos Band, Raoul Vignal and Elizabete Balčus performed on stage. Elizabete, a psychedelic sound artist from Latvia, uses fruits and vegetables in her compositions, creating unique, pumping, alive, and extraterrestrial sounds. The creative process behind Elizabete Balčus’ drawing Elizabete Balčus and the creative process Fruits and vegetables, alive Elizabete Balčus is an amazing performer, composer, musician and a psychedelic sound artist who has the particularity of using fruits and vegetables for her compositions.  Elizabete’s uniqueness certainly influenced my creative process: the – fruit / cable / synthesiser / mixer / amplifier / speaker /air / ear / brain – connection that she established during her presentation, gave me the beautiful experience of perceiving the life inside every piece of food. I found this fascinating, as every fruit and vegetable will generate a different sound every time… Plus you will never get the same lemons in Berlin than in Amalfi! I drew during Elizabete’s performance using a 360 drawing structure – in particular, an equirectangular perspective – for then generating a virtual environment out of it. I chose this format motorised by the enthusiasm of discovering 360 drawings, in 2017 I was at the beginning of my research and intuitive explorations about these kind of drawings. In fact, I started my first PhD in immersive drawing only a week after this session (here is my thesis if you want to check it out), and I only wanted to go deeper and deeper on this kind of hybrid – analogical / digital – artwork.   I captured the fruit / Elizabete / music connection playing with plasticity, fluidity, shapes, connecting points, and colours. Within the virtual environment one can follow those links and move along the different elements. This is also a representation of Elizabete’s music, as her compositions have elements and passages joint within different songs, like in a symphony with different acts. Is it Sabina’s bowler hat or…? And then of course there is also the hat. “Is it Sabina’s bowler hat or…?”, I wrote in Spanish. This sentence has different connotations: on the one hand, it refers to the singer Joaquín Sabina, who likes to wear a bowler hat. That night, for some reason, there was a bowler hat in the stage of the Godot Art Bistrot that called my attention. However, this sentence also refers to Sabina (Sabine in English), the character from The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. In Kundera’s book, Sabine receives Thomas dressed with nothing but the bowler hat. Sabine and Thomas convert that unusual object that belonged to Sabina’s grandfather into a nonsense icon of their sexual games of provocation and sensuality. They make love in Sabina’s bed, which is alone “as a stage” in the middle of the room. And there she was, Elizabete with her sensuality and her exotic hat in the stage… Tragame tierra (Swallow me earth) In my drawings, I like to represent not only what I hear, but also what I feel while I’m doing it. In that regard, the ground below Elizabete’s drawing is opening, creating a black hole where I want to fall and hide: I beg the earth to eat me, to make me disappear. With this, I appeal to the “Tragame tierra / La tierra se abre / Bajo mis pies” (Swallow me earth / The earth opens up / Beneath my feet), sung by Gustavo Cerati in Bomba de Tiempo to materialise the sensation when I have to break the limits and speak to someone that I desire. Because yes, that was the sensation that I had that night of October 2017 when I had to gather my courage to speak to a woman that caught my eye… (and no, it didn’t work out). The VR dimension Elizabete’s artwork has a special distortion that allows me to create a 360º virtual environment. Making a 360º video The drawing was also used as the base for a 360º video, shared and available on YouTube. Of course, my inexperience editing videos pops very much out, yet for me was an amazing experience for mixing cubical perspective, equirectangular perspectives, visual effects, and Elizabete’s music.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks7pOHH_65o Although naïve, the video is a nice way for showing another possible application of immersive drawings. Closing The series of drawings made at the Godot Art Bistrot, like Elizabete: Hat, Fruit or Flute, have been used for creating the above-mentioned 360 VR video, but also for the exhibition “I’m Watching You/Me” and within my research in digital media art, showing some of many creative applications that these compositions can have. The creative process behind Elizabete Balčus’ artwork shows how I fluctuated between instant personal impressions, the technical precision necessary for creating equirectangular panoramas, and the mixing of the two components with virtual reality.  For you to understand easily the complexity of the composition, I ask you to pay attention to the flat image of the artwork, then go to the VR view and look carefully at the upper part. Can you see Elizabete’s green eye? Wonderful, now go back to the flat drawing and try to find it… That. That is the key point for understanding an equirectangular panorama. You will never find it unless you change your mind: in the flat drawing the green eye is just a horizontal line…

Today I’ll introduce you the session I of “Running all Day”, my new drawing. Keep reading to know how this artwork was born…. 26/06/2023, Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪 June, as the month of movement Some weeks ago I started a new drawing that, for several reasons, I couldn’t share until today. Among those reasons I can say that June was a convulsive month, with ups and downs after the hack I suffered in which I lose my web3 profile. Also due to this reason, I jumped some days on my daily posts that I’m still trying to get back on track. June was also the month in which new things came: the opening of my physical atelier/shop/gallery at the Berlin Workstadt, which was a big decision to take. Also, the travel I did for my birthday that nicely distracted me a bit. And finally, the fact that for different reasons the creative meetings started to get less frequents, and with that also my productivity. In any case, I didn’t give it a second thought to these reduction of my creative and sharing activities: I want to keep the idea of the daily posts and the creative meetings as a something really spontaneous that gives me pleasure, right as they were born. But let’s jump into the drawing. Running all Day (I) Running all Day was born from listening to the music of Nodarling. The guitarist and singer of the band, Quique del Bianco, also sells his drawings at the Mauerpark. His stand is in front of mine and every Sunday I have the pleasure to exchange a couple of ideas and nice words with him. In one of those conversations Quique mentioned Nodarling. The day after, I listened to their last album: Space Rider during my creative breakfast at the Unser Café. I was shocked by their music, an energetic psychedelic rock with all the power and strength of an exciting space trip. Quite an experience! I didn’t know what to do when I started the drawing… I just had in mind to do a three vanishing point drawing so to keep completing the collection with Escher-like effects that I started to explore with A Wizard Without a Shadow and How Many Perspectives Are There? (see a partial collection of these artworks here. M6 Landsberger Allee is a (sort of) urban sketch that I did while travelling in Berlin using the tram M6 and the Ring Bahn S41. Here its story: 12/07/2023, Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪 Taking the M6 tram at Lansberger Allee This morning I opened the Berlin Workstadt and took my shift until 13. The morning was calm and uneventful, just a couple of persons entered but nothing really big happened. As the morning was calm, I replied some emails and then worked on an app that I’m developing (nothing really fancy, just something for taking care of my finances and the markets). Also during the morning, I coordinated with two persons offering things through the group Free Your Stuff Berlin. First, with a girl that offered a Matisse painting in an aluminium frame, and second with a guy offering some colour cardboards that I can certainly use for the markets. After my shift at the Berlin Workstadt, I headed my way to the house of Alex and Ono in Prenzlauer Berg. These fellas are two beautiful cats that I sit from time to time since August 2021. I spent the afternoon with them, working a little bit more. Then I headed my destination to pick up the painting and the cardboards. During my trip, I started to draw on my phone, initially just faces and then capturing the people around me. I took the two pictures without the authorisation of the involved subjects, who where so concentrated on their phones that they didn’t even realise I drew them, right as that guy on the M2 that I drew time ago. The stuff and some surprises The Matisse print is bigger than I imaged, around 1,2m wide and 40 cm high. Initially, I thought I’d re use the frame for one of my paintings. But now that I see the image called “Women and Monkeys“, I’m considering to keep it, it is a really nice composition. When I arrived to the second point, the guy who received me saw me with the big frame and immediately offered me more frames and paintings. Of course, I was very curious to see what we had. In the end, I finished picking up a big frame of 1×0.7m and a smaller squared frame of around 40 cm that I’d probably use for (Labyrinth 01). Do you remember my first post mentioning when I recorded the video of (Who Wants to Kiss)? Well, today I’m going to show you the result of the session 👀 09/06/2023, Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪 Who Wants to Kiss “Who wants to kiss… (searches for the mouth)” is an artwork with which I broke a couple of regular practices from my comfort zone. For example, I normally draw in a couple of sessions using pencil. Then, I draw on top of that outline with ink, this normally is a very quick stage. After that, sometimes I add more details and hatchings to give the drawing more depth and texture. Finally, I paint, generally in two sessions of watercolours: first giving the colour, and then the shadows. That is how I did for A Wizard Without a Shadow or Mitte. Instead, today’s artwork was a huge challenge because I did all of that process in one day. Actually, in just 6 hours. Questions Could I have done it in more hours? Yes. Was it stressful to do it in such a short time? Not at all! My point is the following: I do not do things because I feel that I must do them for someone else. Seen from that perspective, I didn’t have the obligation of finishing the drawing. I simply chose to do it. You might also ask my dear reader, how did you know that you were going to finish it in such a short time? I didn’t. I simply did what I felt in that time frame, the result was going to be good in either case because it was just an experimentation. It is also a nice exercise for your mind: one wants to add more details here and there, put some more textures to gain more depth. But I stopped myself and said: this is it. This is what we have got and that is how it should be. A nice collaboration Another practice I regularly do is to edit my own videos. However, this time that task was in hands of a lovely friend. She edited the video with mastery, synchronising the music with the evolvement of the drawing quite perfectly. Thanks Koromoto Music and Carolina Lares Jaffe! Hello dear reader, this is the update II after I have got hacked. Today I’ll share some more answers with you. 07/07/2023, Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪 Update II In the 1st update of #FreeLufo, I explained how some things created on Lens are associated to the handle while some other to the wallet. That’s why you will lose all your wall with the previous posts if you lose your profile NFT. Rebuilding your profile from the scratch can be a painful prospect, especially if you are building something on a daily basis, as I have been doing since 1st January 2023. I mean, is it? I could start with a new handle – something I might have done since my wallet is still whitelisted – and then work on a broad and massive communication. The “good news” about this is that if someone cashes in any of the posts I have created, the money will still go to my wallet. Even if the old handle is associated with a new wallet. The bad news is that the new owner could impersonate me, copy the new content and profit from it. However, this can also be solved blacklisting the old handle within the same Lens dApps. The Profile Guardian of the Lens Protocol To prevent hacks and phishing attacks, the Lens team announced the LIP-4: a guardian to protect the profile NFT. The profile guardian “disables certain critical actions such as approvals and transfers for Lens profiles. Profile Guardian is enabled by default and can be opted-out if profile owners want to move it to a new address”. This way, you will need an extra layer of actions before being hacked and losing your NFT profile. The Guardian NFT was deployed yesterday. Talking to the Lens core team These days I’ve been talking to the Lens core team, and I made them the following questions: As you can see, the answers are still uncertain although they are working on it. Probably a v2 of Lens will better protect profile NFTs, help people be more aware and not so foolishly lose their profile as happened to me. Fingers crossed this experience will get always better! La canción ¿Qué pasó? del grupo Bersuit Vergarabat me inspiró las líneas que hoy les comparto. El dibujo es una composición hecha apenas unos días antes de pintar la Partenopea in rosso e verde 09/09/2019, Nápoles, Italia 🇮🇹 Maldita espera, es el mejor tiempo perdido Bersuit Vergarabat es un grupo musical argentino que marcó fuertemente mi adolescencia. Sus letras bohemias y sus mensajes escurridizos, su rock de protesta y su esencia de guitarreada frente al fogón representaron para mi una imagen ideal en aquel el momento en el que yo también quería protestar contra todos, irme a vivir a las montañas, y vivir del aire y del pasto de las sierras de Córdoba para curar mis desilusiones. “Maldita espera, es el mejor tiempo perdido”… dice una parte de la canción, y eso pensaba mientras estaba en Nápoles en 2019. Me sentía en la espera de poder volver a Berlín, pero también pensaba que lo que estaba haciendo era el mejor tiempo perdido. Estudiaba y avanzaba en mi doctorado, y cada vez faltaba menos. The song ¿Qué pasó? (What happened?) by Bersuit Vergarabat inspired the drawing I am sharing with you today. The mini artwork was made just a few days before painting Partenopea in rosso e verde. 09/09/2019, Naples, Italy 🇮🇹 Damn wait, it’s the best time lost Bersuit Vergarabat is an Argentinian musical group that strongly marked my adolescence. Their bohemian lyrics and their slippery messages, their protest rock and their essence of guitar-playing in front of the campfire represented for me an ideal image at the time when I also wanted to protest against everyone, to go lost into the mountains, and to live off the air and the grass of the Córdoba mountains to cure my disillusionment. “Damn waiting, it’s the best time lost”… says a part of the song, and that’s what I was thinking while I was in Naples in 2019. I felt like I was waiting my return to Berlin, but I also thought it was the best time wasted. I was studying and making progress on my PhD, and the end was getting closer and closer. This whirlwind of thoughts was going through my head almost 20 years later of the moment in which I was innocently trying to find the chords of that song on my first guitar. Today, instead of sharing many more of my words with you dear reader, I will leave you with the song’s lyrics, in the hope that it will give you some interesting food for thought: What happened? Siga leyendo estimada lectora, para saber cómo fue este primer día y conocer quién fue mi primer cliente… 04/07/2023, Berlín, Alemania 🇩🇪 Lufo Art en el Berlin Workstadt El post de hoy es una actualización de el anuncio que hice hace un par de días. Esta mañana fui a montar mi stand en el Berlin Workstadt de Berlín y ya está todo listo. Fue un día largo, con muchas idas y venidas. Era la primera vez que montaba mis cosas en este espacio, así que tuve que probar muchas cosas antes de decidirme por algo. Bárbara de Colección Emma fue la primera artista del Workstadt en aparecer esta mañana. Ella es chilena y arquitecta, y dedica toda su creatividad a hacer ropa increíble con telas recicladas y de diferentes tipos. Bárbara se enamoró de mis dibujos y fue mi primera compradora 🥰🫶🏻 Al mediodía almorcé con G., con quien estoy preparando algo muy bonito para una nueva instalación 👀. Justo después del agradable almuerzo en Hamburger Bahnhof junto al río, volví de nuevo al Berlin Workstadt, donde permanecí hasta unos minutos después de las 20:00. A pesar del largo día, volví a casa con la gran satisfacción de tener el stand ya montado. Mañana será otro día ajetreado, tengo que comprar algunas cosas para embellecer aún más mi lugar… Espero que les guste la configuración actual del stand. Si estás en Berlín, ¡pasen a saludar! Today is the glorious day in which Lufo Art started to have a permanent stand at the Berlin Workstadt shop. Keep reading to know how did it go and to find out about my first client! 04/07/2023, Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪 Lufo Art at the Berlin Workstadt Today’s post is an update of the announcement I made a couple of days ago. This morning I went to set up my stand at the Berlin Workstadt and it’s all ready to go. It has been a long day, with a lot of comings and goings. It was my first time setting up my stuff in this space, so I needed to try a lot of things before I settled on something. Barbara from Emma Collection was the first artist to appear this morning. She is Chilean and an architect, and dedicates all her creativity to making amazing clothes with recycled and different kinds of fabrics. Barbara fell in love with my drawings, and she was my first buyer! 🥰🫶🏻 At noon, I had lunch with G., with whom I am preparing something very nice for a new installation 👀. Right after the nice lunch at Hamburger Bahnhof by the river, I head back to the Berlin Workstadt, where I stayed until a few minutes after 8 p.m. Despite the long day, I returned home with the great satisfaction of having the stand already set up. Tomorrow will be another busy day, I have to buy some things to make my place even more beautiful… I hope you like the current stand set-up. If you are in Berlin, come and say hello! Do you want to know my dear reader how I celebrated my first 34 years of life in Toulouse?In today’s post I’ll tell you about this beautiful city in France, and what does “switcheó” mean 👀 34 en Toulouse 01/07/2019, Toulouse, France 🇳🇱 Since it’s my birthday time, I’ll remember another place I visited a couple of years ago: Toulouse. I arrived to that city because of something as random as choosing a place for the price of the air tickets, as I had mentioned I do in yesterday’s post. I liked the city: not too big and not too small by European standards, still with a certain charm of the historical centre, nice riverbanks, and with a fresh air of a young city… not because the city is young of course, but because there are a lot of young people. I remember getting a fairly central room in a hotel with few stars and a lot of surprises, where I stayed between 28/06 and 02/07/2019. The hotel was close to a local market which I visited several times, and where I bought fresh fruits that I brought with me during my walks. Human scale If there is one thing I did in Toulouse, it was walking, lots and lots of walking. The city seemed to me to have the perfect human scale to be explored on foot. Although it was summer, the temperature was still acceptable so as not to die of dehydration under the sun. On one of these walks I discovered a giant park, full of people, in a sort of electronic music festival. It was wonderful, I bought a beer and sat on the grass listening to the music, with absolutely no worries ahead of me. The night of my birthday, I went to the Concorde bar, a place with those little round French tables as small as characteristic. There I drank a good beer and made this little drawing that I am sharing with you today. In the drawing you can read “Something did clap and it switcheó”. “Switcheó”, a very streetwise and informal Spanish adaptation of “switching”, is an expression that C. taught me in 2017. “Switcheó” is the action of suddenly changing our mood, for example from anger to joy, or whatever, but fast.
